Learning from the Greats
I’ve asked some of the new Giants to tell me about the ONE lensmaster or Lens that inspired, encouraged, or empowered them to do all of the hard work required to become a Giant Squid lensmaster.
Here’s what new Giant lwhitelaw told me:
“I would have to give credit to Joan Adams for inspiring me to go for Giant Squid. I first met Joan in the fall of 2007 in an online forum. Someone had posted a notice on the forum about forming a mastermind group and I was eager to join. There were five of us from that forum that met weekly via conference line to discuss our goals and share our knowledge of internet marketing. It was around this time that Joan first joined squidoo.
Fast forward 6 months and Joan was still quite involved with squidoo and getting to know her way around quite well. By this time, a few of our mastermind members had dropped off and Joan and I were the only two members still meeting via conference line every week. We decided to seek out some new members so that we could keep the momentum going. Shortly thereafter, Kate Loving Shenk, Charly Leetham and Becky Rhone-Nolan joined our group and in the last 6 months, Liz Lichti has become a member too.
In the spring or summer of 2008 (I can’t remember exactly) Joan became a Giant Squid and then by the end of the year she became a Giant 100. Of course I visited and commented on many of her lenses and it seemed like she was having an awful lot of fun on squidoo. Then in March of 2009, two more of my mastermind friends (Kate Loving Shenk and Charly Leethan) made it to Giant. Well, I started to feel like I was missing out on something and wanted to use whatever creative talents I had to do the same. So, when the next Giant challenge was announced – I decided to go for it. At the time, I believe I only had 4 lenses (and two of them were not even published). It seemed like a daunting task to create 46 more lenses in the 90 day time frame but once I got rolling with it, it just didn’t seem like work. It was fun! And, Joan and all my other mastermind buddies were cheering me on and were there to offer their support all the way through to the finish – I could not have done it without them.
I am truly honoured (Canadian spelling) to be a part of the Giant Squid team and plan to continue building lenses. I think I need a little breather before setting a goal to get to Giant 100 but I will be continuing my squidoo journey for sure.
