If you’re anything like me, you know what Halloween is all about. Trick-or-treating and costumes and gore. Right?

But how did it all come to be? Why IS a bat so freaky? Why aren’t other scary figures like the Boogie Man associated with Halloween? Monarch13 explores this in her lens 7 Scary Symbols of Halloween.

“Jack-O-Lantern literally means “Jack of the Lantern” and an Irish legend tells of a man named Jack, who could not enter heaven or hell and was doomed to wander aimlessly each night, with only a candle, in a hollowed out turnip to guide him. To keep him away, local villagers would carve scary faces into turnips and place them in their windows. Irish immigrants in the United States began using commonly available pumpkins rather then turnips, and the practice continues to this day. Thus the flickering flames from the Jack-O-Lantern eventually became associated with the spirits of the dead.”

Who woulda thunk! Visit the lens to learn why bats and witches and black cats are the symbols of Halloween, plus more.

I’ll never “turnip” my nose at pumpkin carving again. Happy Halloween!

Just a heads up about planned maintenance:

Between 6:30pm and 8:30pm Eastern time tonight (Friday, 10/30/09) we’ll be disabling lens editing for some database maintenance. Lenses will be visible and reachable as usual, but lensmasters won’t be able to edit them or create new ones during that 2 hour window.

That is all!

Mwah ha ha! It’s Friday before Halloween! While most people are happy getting their spook on, some families just aren’t ready to be scared. That’s why lensmaster Treasures-By-Brenda has put together this lens on milder entertainment options for movie night.

Not Too Scary Movies For Tweens or Pre-Teens on Halloween is a collection of scary movies you can enjoy with your older kids that won’t send them (or you) up to hide under the bed. She’s even included one of my favorite thrillers, Gremlins! Two of the picks are Walt Disney classics, but you’ll have to visit the lens to find out which ones.

Every holiday has its traditions, but Treasures-By-Brenda knows that not every tradition is right for every person. That’s what makes this lens so great. She’s helped readers find a way to enjoy the fright of Halloween without the fear of overdoing it. What a great niche to explore!

Grab your pillow and popcorn. It’s BOO-vie night!

CherylKlmabd03b16e69a8394882d3bb53e67e7f9_1208228098Cheryl_CharcoalNew Giant Squid Lensmaster CherylK would like you to take a look at her lens, My Quest for a Greener Life

My Quest for a Greener Life is my very first lens which I published in February 2008.

We were housesitting in Washington state at the time and somehow I found the Squidoo website.  I wish I could remember how I discovered it but I can’t.  I was probably googling for information about something.  That’s my guess, anyway.  Best thing I’ve done in a long time – didn’t take long for me to get hooked!

But I also was reading everything I could about being more earth friendly so I decided that my first lens should reflect that.  Making better choices and learning about the consequences of my lifestyle certainly opened my eyes.

I think it’s important to be aware of how we’re damaging our environment but I’m not a radical or anything like that.  I’ve met people who are totally obsessed and that turns me off.  I think just being aware and taking small steps are the best way to start.  Helping to get the word out seemed like a responsible thing to do.  That’s the story behind my first Squidoo lens!

I’d like to thank you and Bonnie for being so supportive of all of us.  And thanks to Megan and all of the ‘behind the scenes” people who make sure everything runs like clockwork.  And thanks to all the Squid Angels and Mentors and Citizen Squids.  A better group of people does not exist.
I  started a blog the previous fall called Lake Mary Musings and did a blog post about my first lens there.  You can read it here:  Do You Squidoo?
All the bestCherylK
Thank you CherylK!  The lens is super and CherylK covers her timely topic excellently and with heart.  Be sure to check it out!

Have some paint? Cardboard? Adult supervision? That’s all you need to concoct an amazing Halloween costume for the kiddies. Whether you’re looking for an entire ensemble or festive facial features, lensmaster Pastiche shows you how with her lens Make Your Own Costumes, Masks and Face Paint.

Pastiche is a queen of crafts, and she’s used this lens to showcase a variety of crafty costume ideas. She doesn’t stop at homemade costumes. (I’m a big fan of the PacMan cutouts.) She’ll even show you how to create homemade paint! The most versatile of her crafts is a papier mache Mardi Gras mask, which could be decorated to instantly transform the wearer into any animal, mineral, or vegetable.

The best part is you won’t need special supplies to create these crafts. They’re all made using common household materials. Be prepared – you might end up just making a bloody mess and liking it.
